Workshop Performance
The Büro für Dramatische Zukunft (BDZ) is an international and multilingual theatre group, based in Zurich, that was set up at the first forum of young theatre professionals held during the fourth Swiss Theatre Festival in 2017.
The BDZ’s first project under artistic director Bernadette Binner (from Berlin) and Anouk Gyssler (from Aarau in Switzerland), entitled Theatrical frontiers - linguistic, aesthetic and cultural, tackles the coming together of different dramatic traditions in Switzerland and considers systemic boundaries within Swiss theatre.
This project involves both identifying and examining frontiers, as well as considering practical strategies for overcoming them in an artistic environment. The Workshop Performance was developed for this purpose, a specific format that is nourished by the involvement of the multilingual audience and the performers' experiences.
The diversity and heterogeneity of Swiss theatre is the springboard for this debate. The paramount questions are therefore: why is Swiss theatre divided into language-based groups? Why is there so little exchange of ideas within Swiss theatre? What forms could an enhanced exchange take?
We invite you to accept the BDZ's invitation to a multilingual and critical reflection on the Swiss theatre landscape, at which representatives of the country’s three main language communities will embark on a quest for a shared theatrical identity, and where we will also hear voices coming from neighbouring countries and from the audience.
