The research project DisAbility on Stage is devoted to a matter that is currently topical in Swiss theatre and dance but resembles a new departure for academic research: drama and dance with disabled actors and actresses. The aim of this project run by four Swiss universities in cooperation with dance and theatre companies as well as festivals in different language regions is to trigger an academic debate on inclusion in theatre and dance and to transfer the research findings into practice.
Which aesthetic potential does this art form have? Which working methods emerge during rehearsals between able-bodied and disabled actors? Which dramatic languages and forms are invented?
The project presentation examines these questions. Research findings are illustrated with excerpts from a film about the project Freie Republik HORA by the HORA Theatre (winner of the Swiss Grand Prix Theater/Hans-Reinhart-Ring 2016), accompanied by a discussion with actors and actresses as well as performances by disabled actors.
